The iconic pen-enabled Galaxy Note 10 has arrived ? less tech-wowing but more consumer-friendly ? as it comes in a smaller and less pricey version on top of the signature bulky phablet phone size, both with a smarter pen with remote-control and enhanced handwriting features.
The new lineup for the bar-raising Galaxy Note 10th anniversary phones was unpacked at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Wednesday at a time its maker Samsung Electronics fights to defend its No. 1 rank on the smartphone category against stagnancy in sales and technology breakthrough and shrinking profit amid multiple challenges on the global market.
The Galaxy Note has gotten bigger over the years, beginning with the original Note’s 5.3-inch display to the Note 9’s 6.4 inches. For the first time, the Note would be available in two sizes, with the 6.3-inch Note 10 and the 6.8-inch Note 10 Plus. Both devices will begin preorders Thursday and hit stores on August 23.
Samsung showed some major improvements to its S Pen stylus. Most notable is the introduction of the “Air Action” gestures, which allow users to control their camera, music or gallery by simply waving the pen around in the air. Handwritten notes can now be converted into typewritten Microsoft Word documents, complementing the phone’s greater PC connectivity.
The bezels were reduced further for maximum screen size and the hole punch for the selfie camera made even smaller than on the Galaxy S10. Like its rival Apple, Samsung removed the standard headphone jack, but included USB-C headphones in the box.
The button for Samsung’s voice assistant Bixby was gone, and instead made to activate with a long press of the power button.
The Note has a 3500㎃h battery and the Note 10 a 4300㎃h battery, capable for use all day on a 30-minute charge.
Both versions come with a 10-megapixel front camera and 16-megapixel triple rear camera, with a time-of-flight sensor camera added to the Note 10 Plus.
The two models are available in either 256GB or 512GB storage. They come in three colors ? Aura Glow, Aura White and Aura Black.
The Note 10 starts at around $950 and the Note 10 Plus at $1,100.
